During enrolment, you can choose a special religious education option for your child from the school’s available approved providers. You can withdraw your child from special religious education by selecting alternative meaningful activities, or special education in ethics if it’s available.
At Warrawee Public School, Special Religious Education (SRE) and Special Ethics Education (SEE) is delivered on Wednesdays from 9.00 - 9.40am.
When using the Online Enrolment System (OES), parents and carers are able to opt-in to SRE at the time of their child's enrolment. After the initial enrolment, notification of changes to a child's enrolment in SRE should be given to your child's teacher, in writing.
The following SRE classes are offered at Warrawee Public School:
Catholic
Special Religious Education (SRE) is the time set aside in Government Schools for Catechists (officially called Scripture Teachers).
SRE is mandated by the Education Act (1990) and gives parents the choice to have children formed in the faith of their family. Catechists from your local Catholic Church and authorised and sent out each school week to teach Catholic children about Jesus and his saving message that brings hope, joy, and self-giving faithfulness and resilience in forming a Christ-like character.

Combined Christian (including Anglican, Presbyterian and Uniting)
Combined Christian SRE is provided by teachers from local churches who are authorised and trained by the following approved providers: Anglican Diocese of Sydney, Presbyterian Church of Australia (NSW) and Uniting Church in Australia. The SRE curriculum used is produced by Christian Education Publications and is approved by both SRE providers.
The curriculum explores the good news about Jesus Christ found in the Bible and the depth of God’s love for people. Each lesson has been developed to be taught in an age-appropriate manner.
Lessons include activities which make the lessons fun and inclusive for children and young people, and also give them the opportunity to critically explore and deepen their faith, pray and reflect. For more information about the SRE curriculum used in this school visit whysre.com.au.
Hindu
The purpose of Hindu Scripture Classes is to help students identify with the Hindu Religion, Sanatana Dharma, Rich Hindu History and Hindu Role models. The Hindu Scripture Classes also make sure that students learn how enduring and time tested Hindu values are universal and how they can be applied in this Century.
Special Ethics Education (SEE)
Ethics classes support children to develop a life-long capacity for making well-thought-out decisions about ethical issues. Through the give-and-take of considered argument, students learn to respectfully challenge each other’s ideas and support their own arguments with evidence, rather than according to habit or peer pressure. Our volunteer ethics teachers, who are trained members of the school and broader community, use detailed lesson materials which present a range of stories, scenarios and questions to generate discussion. Ethics teachers are trained to impartially facilitate student discussions, helping them develop their critical thinking and collaborative inquiry skills. Ethics teachers support student learning by:
* modelling the inquiry process – by asking questions and encouraging discussion
* showing genuine curiosity and interest in the questions being discussed
* staying neutral – ethics teachers are trained to keep their own views out of the discussion
* creating a positive learning environment – by allowing students time to think and encouraging them to share ideas and give reasons for their opinions.
The Special Education in Ethics program is provided by Primary Ethics. You can find out more information about the program at (warrawee.ethics@gmail.com) and the Primary Ethics website (https://primaryethics.com.au/).
Non SRE/SEE Classes
During the time that SRE/SEE classes are being held, students not attending will be located in a separate space and will participate in meaningful activities, such as reading, private study or completing homework.
Visit the department’s website for more information about religion and ethics.
Learning Approach
Our school uses explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts.
Learning at our school is student-centred, inclusive and practical. We are committed to equity and access. We support all learning styles and needs. Our teachers use proven teaching strategies. They take part in ongoing professional development to stay up to date with best teaching practice.
Our learning approach includes:
- real-world learning: hands-on tasks, group work and exploring new ideas
- technology: to help students learn and build digital skills
- flexible teaching: the right support for each student, with a focus on wellbeing
- community connections: through excursions and local programs.
We support every student’s academic progress by:
- checking their progress and giving clear and timely feedback
- setting learning goals with each student
- giving extra help with personalised plans and support from specialist staff
- reporting on each student’s learning progress so parents and carers know how their child is doing
- providing targeted literacy and numeracy support in small groups
- making wellbeing part of everyday learning
- working with families to support learning at home and school
- helping students through transitions, like starting school or moving to a new stage of learning.

Additional learning support
At our school, we ensure every student is ready to learn. We support students with disability and additional learning needs so they can take part in all areas of school life. You do not need a formal diagnosis for your child to receive support in a mainstream class. Support can begin at any stage of school.
