Kindergarten Information Night
In August each year, we host an information evening to provide you with more information about our school and the programs on offer, school readiness and how to prepare your child for school. There will also be opportunities for you to ask questions.
Kindergarten Orientation Sessions
During Term 4 our orientation sessions help children:
- meet teachers and classmates
- explore classrooms and playgrounds
- practise simple routines
Parents and carers join information sessions to learn about daily schedules, uniforms, lunches and communication. Our P&C also host some playdates at local parks to encourage new friendships before school begins.
'Tell Me About Your Child' - Parent Interviews:
Before your child begins, all families meet with a principal or executive staff member. This is a time to share:
- medical conditions or allergies
- your child's strengths and interests
- learning support needs
- family circumstances that may affect your child’s start
We want every child to feel safe, supported and included in school life.
Best Start Assessment
All Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
How to prepare your child for starting school
Children are not expected to know any sounds or to be able to read before starting school. The best way to prepare your child for starting school is:
- Speak positively about starting school and try to calm any nerves.
- Discuss the sort of things that will happen at school.
- Go for a walk past the school or point it out when driving past.
- Arrange playdates with friends and provide opportunities for cooperative play.
- Practise turn-taking and sharing.
- Draw with a range of materials – pencils, crayons, textas.
- Have conversations with your child.
- Read stories to your child.
- Encourage your child to get dressed independently.
- Allow them to open and close food containers and feed themselves.
- Try packing and carrying their own bag to preschool.
- Your child should be able to go to the bathroom independently.

What to expect in Kindergarten
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
At Warrawee PS, we believe in building strong partnerships with our families to ensure we can educate, empower and challenge all students to reach their full potential.
